简介：Spanish has been growing in popularity as an alternative to French in schools, and is a common choice as an element of a broader modern languages degree. It had the smallest decline of any language as higher fees arrived in 2012, but still attracted only two thirds of the applications for French. The table also includes Portuguese, which had only ten applications at degree level at the start of 2012, although it is still offered at 18 universities, at least as part of a broader languages programme. Cambridge has maintained its lead over Oxford at the top of the table, with the highest entry standards and the most satisfied students. It also shares the best employment score with University College London, in ninth place. The two universities are the only ones in the table to see more than 80 per cent of students go straight into graduate-level jobs or further study. Sixth-placed Nottingham and Manchester, twelfth, tied for the best performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The 2011 National Student Survey showed high levels of satisfaction in most universities. Only the bottom two failed to satisfy at least 70 per cent of final-year undergraduates. Entry standards have continued to rise: for the first time, more than half of the universities in the table average over 400 points and none slips below 280. All but eight of the 45 institutions in the ranking are pre-1992 universities. Northumbria is the highest-placed of the newer foundations, but has lost its place in the top 20 this year. For the fifth year in a row, Portsmouth makes the top 30. The languages are in the top half of the employment table and the 8 per cent unemployment rate is below average. The same cannot be said of starting salaries in graduate jobs, which had fallen below £20,000 in the latest survey. Employment prospects appear to be more evenly spread between universities than in many subjects.
