简介:History survived the introduction of higher fees with only a small drop in applications, leaving it still close to the top ten subjects as a degree choice. The subject was already among the most competitive at entry, with almost six applications to every place in 2011. Surveys have shown a strong representation of historians among business leaders, celebrities and senior politicians, but the subject is close to the bottom ten for employment prospects and in the bottom half of the table for graduate earnings. More historians are in non-graduate jobs than those categorised as graduate occupations six months after completing a degree. Cambridge has retaken the top place in history that it lost to Durham last year, although the two remain close together. Cambridge has the highest entry standards and shares the best research score with University College London, which has dropped to seventh. In fact, Imperial College’s work on the history of science won the top grade in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, but history is not an undergraduate subject at Imperial so it does not appear in this table. The London School of Economics, in fourth place, once again has by far the best employment score, six percentage points ahead of its nearest rival. While the LSE saw 87 per cent of historians go straight into graduate jobs or onto postgraduate courses, the proportion was below 50 per cent at 40 of the 91 universities in the ranking. Average entry scores at the top six universities are all over 500 points, the equivalent of more than four As at A level, with Cambridge leading the way. Other leading universities’ entry standards are closer to the top six than in many other subjects: all the top ten – and another 19 universities further down the ranking – average at least 400 points. For the second successive year, the most satisfied students are at Derby, which is not among the top 50 universities in the ranking. Satisfaction levels are high at most of the universities in the ranking: only one fails to achieve a 70 per cent approval rating. The old universities’ domination of the table has increased since last year, when two post-1992 universities appeared in the top 30. Huddersfield remains the best-placed of its peers, but is restricted to a share of 33rd place this year. St Andrews remains the top university in Scotland, while Cardiff does the same in Wales.以下是2013年times英国大学排名历史专业排名。
