简介:Applications for English were down by about the average for all subjects in March 2012, but it remained among the top ten choices for a degree. The subject’s popularity has hardly been dented by the fact that it is not in the top 50 for starting salaries and barely any higher for overall employment levels. The latest dip in the demand for places follow a run of increases and there were still almost six applications for every place in 2011. High entry grades reflect this: eight universities average more than 500 points and only a handful drop below 250. Oxford remains top in English for the third year in a row, following a series of changes of leadership in the previous decade. It has the highest entry grades, but Cambridge has more satisfied students and could not be closer overall. Chichester, down in equal-59th place, actually recorded the best scores in the 2011 National Student Survey (NSS), having been close to this achievement in 2010. Fifth-placed York produced the best results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, when three quarters of its work was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent. Durham, the leader in 2009, is in third this year and has the best employment score. Glasgow displaces St Andrews as the top university in Scotland, while Cardiff has the same status in Wales. Leeds Trinity University College does well to finish in the top 40 for the second successive year, while Buckingham might have reached the top 30 if it had been able to enter the RAE. De Montfort is still the top post-1992 university, although it has lost its place in the top 30 after a poor year for graduate destinations. No university in the table saw eight out of ten graduates go straight into graduate-level work or further study, but ten of the 103 institutions did not manage even four out of ten. Almost a third of English graduates continue their studies – more than go into graduate-level jobs alone. Unemployment is lower than average for all subjects, but approaching four out of ten graduates start out in lower-level jobs. However, English has produced consistently good scores in the National Student Survey. In the results published in 2011, only one university in the table failed to satisfy at least 70 per cent of the final-year undergraduates.以下是2013年times英国大学排名英语专业排名。
