简介:Education is the only ranking that still contains teaching scores – because teacher training assessments are carried out by Ofsted at English universities. The new table includes the latest results, although some are no longer available on the Teaching Agency website. Sixteen universities – including two from outside the top 40, University College Birmingham and Worcester – tie for the best scores from the inspections. Cambridge and Durham, the top two overall, are among the others. Cambridge maintains a clear lead in the table with entry standards that are over 100 points ahead of its nearest challenger and much the best research grades. West of Scotland has shot up from 15th to third place and shares the top student satisfaction score with Derby, 22 places lower. Glasgow, in fourth place, almost manages full employment, as it did last year. Eight others reach the 90 per cent mark for the proportion of graduates going straight into teaching or another graduate-level job, or on to postgraduate study. Education is just outside the top ten for employment, with more than 60 per cent of graduates going straight into schools and only 4 per cent unemployed. However, the average starting salary of £21,061 is outside the top 20 for all subjects. Employment scores at different universities reflect to some extent the variations in demand for new staff between primary and secondary schools as well as between different parts of the UK. Universities that specialise in primary training are at an advantage at the moment because vacancies are more plentiful in primary than secondary schools. Differences are beginning to show up in the table, which includes some scores in the lower reaches that are below any in recent years. Satisfaction levels are high generally, not only among the final-year undergraduates who complete the National Student Survey, but also in the early stage of careers. Three years after graduation, those with education degrees were among the most satisfied at work and least inclined to wish they had taken a different subject. Some of the best-known education departments are absent from the table because they offer only the postgraduate courses that have become the normal route into secondary teaching and an increasingly popular choice for those wanting a career in primary schools. As such, they are not included in the National Student Survey for the subject and neither entry scores nor graduate destinations are comparable. The University of London’s Institute of Education, which achieved the top grades in the 2008 research assessments, is one example; Oxford and King’s College London, which ran it close, are others. Low entry scores have been a concern to successive governments, but only one university averages (just) less than 200 points in the latest table, while most score more than 250. Teacher training courses have become more selective of late and there are now nearly eight applications to the place – considerably more than the average for all subjects. The economic downturn helped to encourage substantial growth in the demand for places over the past two years. Applications were down by 9 per cent in March 2012, but education was still among the ten most popular subjects. 以下是2013年times英国大学排名教育学专业排名。
