简介:Veterinary medicine was one of the select band of subjects to attract more applicants in spite of the move to higher fees. An increase of almost 8 per cent in the demand for places on courses beginning in 2012 was the third in succession. There were already almost nine applications per place and entry standards bettered only by medicine itself. Veterinary medicine is another of the rankings in which employment scores have been removed from the calculations that determine universities’ positions. The scores are still shown in the table, but the review group of academic planners consulted on the Guide agreed that employment rates in the subject were so tightly bunched that small differences could distort the overall ranking. Nottingham is the newest of the seven schools, opening only in 2006, so the first students did not graduate in time for their statistics to be included in this edition of the Guide. But a clear lead on student satisfaction was enough to take it to the top, despite Cambridge’s much higher entry standards. Edinburgh, in third place, produced the best performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. There are no degrees in veterinary medicine in Wales or Northern Ireland. Veterinary medicine remains in fourth place for employment this year but, surprisingly, the subject has dropped out of the top five for starting salaries in graduate-level jobs. Although the small numbers taking lower-level employment earned more than the graduates of any other subject in non-graduate work, vets have fallen behind economists and engineers in graduate-level jobs. Most courses demand high grades in chemistry and biology, with some accepting physics or maths as one alternative subject. Cambridge and the Royal Veterinary College also set applicants a specialist aptitude test that is used by a number of medical schools. Few candidates win places without evidence of practical commitment to the subject, through work experience, either in veterinary practices or laboratories. The norm for veterinary science degrees is five years, but the Cambridge course takes six years and both Bristol and Nottingham provide a “pre-veterinary” year. Both Edinburgh and the Royal Veterinary College run four-year courses for graduates.以下是2013年times英国大学排名兽医专业单科排名。
