简介:Psychology is the biggest table in the Guide, with yet another university having joined the ranking this year. Applications fell by 6 per cent at the start of 2012, but only nursing and design attracted bigger totals. The subject remains among the most popular in spite of a relatively poor record in the graduate employment market: it is in the bottom six for the proportion of graduates with “positive destinations” and the bottom ten for average starting salaries in graduate-level jobs. Although unemployment is below average at 8 per cent, 44 per cent of graduates begin their careers in low-level jobs. Most undergraduate programmes are accredited by the British Psychological Society, which ensures that key topics are covered, but the clinical and biological content of courses still varies considerably. Some universities require maths and/or biology A levels among an average of at least three Bs, but others are much less demanding. The contrast is obvious in the ranking, with 26 universities averaging more than 400 points at entry but eight below 250 points. Cambridge has retained its lead over Oxford at the top of the table, recording the best scores on all four measures. Cambridge’s entry grades were 80 points ahead of its ancient rival’s and the proportion of psychologists going straight into graduate-level jobs or further study was 5 percentage points better. The student satisfaction measure was closer: Heriot-Watt, in 50th place, was only a point behind. But the 80 per cent of research considered world-leading or internationally excellent gave Cambridge comfortably the best grades in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The top four in the table are unchanged since last year, but there has been considerable movement further down. Cardiff and Royal Holloway have both moved up five places to enter the top ten, while Sheffield has slipped six places and out of it. Glasgow remains the top university in Scotland and Cardiff the same in Wales. Central Lancashire and Lincoln are the only post-1992 universities the top 40, while Northumbria and the West of England are the closest to joining them.以下是2013年Times心理学排名。
